It´s all about love

Yesterday at the youth church service, Pastor Ana Feitosa talked about the fruit of the Spirit. Something I had already realized for some time and that she corroborated was that it all boils down to love.

The fruit of the Spirit is listed in Galatians 5:22:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. (KJV)

Those nine characteristics make up one whole. It´s like the fruit of the Spirit were a mandarin orange with nine segments. What is even more interesting is that this nine-faceted fruit can come down to a single feature: love.

This remarkable thing called love was superbly described by the apostle Paul:

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres”. (1Corinthians 13:4-7)

I think the evangelist D.L.Moody had this scripture in mind when he came up with this inspiring piece of poetry about the fruit of the Spirit in function of love:

“joy is love exulting,
peace is love in repose,
longsuffering is love enduring,
gentleness is love in society,
goodness is love in action,
faith is love on the battlefield,
meekness is love at school,
temperance is love in training.”

How can we bear this fruit which the world so desperately needs? The Lord Jesus has the answer:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener(…)
Remain in me, and I will remain in you.
No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.
Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” (John 15:1,4)
