The other day I was walking down the street going back home after another day of work. I was a little absent-minded, thinking about some of the things that I’d been praying about when it just so happened that Jeremy Camp’s song “Enough” popped up on my iPod and interrupted my thoughts. As I listened, the song reminded me of a simple truth that at times we forget:
God is more than enough.
I mean, it’s great to have enough of something we need or desire. But God is able to go far beyond that! It’s so powerful and amazing that this phrase is used to describe God Himself. It’s associated with the meaning for the Hebrew term “El Shaddai”, which is usually translated in English as “God Almighty”, and also means “The All-Sufficient One”. This name firstly appears in the Scriptures in Genesis 17, when God restated His promise of a son to Abram. As I read in a book, in Abram’s case and in many others’, “God showed His all-sufficiency by turning nature around and providing miracles that were contrary to natural events”. That emphasizes God’s might and power to do just about anything. God truly is more than sufficient to meet our needs. Each and every one of them (Philippians 4:19).
Notwithstanding, while listening to the song, this time I started to think not of what God can do for me but rather who He already is to me. In other words, I began to meditate and remind myself that I already have all I really need in life: the superb and magnificent presence of Almighty God! As the psalmist put it: “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.’ ” (Psalms 16:2 – NASB). Even in the life of Abram, God showed Himself as his “exceedingly great reward” (Genesis 15:1).
That teaches me that we can rejoice right where we are, knowing that we don’t really “need” anything other than God. When we learn to be content with God and Him alone (and with what we already have in Him), then He’ll eventually give us the things that we previously thought we “had” to have. And by no means I’m saying that we ought to sit back and have no desires or expectations whatsoever in regard to future things. God has many promises for His children and all His promises in Him are Yes and Amen! (2Corinthians 1:20). The Father knows how to give good things to the ones who ask Him (Matthew 7:11). Actually, it’s all just something of a shift in perspective, from focusing less on the blessing to focusing more on the blesser.
Learning to enjoy God’s presence and His Word is key to living a successful, prosperous and full of joy life. That’s part of remaining in the True Vine (John 15), our Lord Jesus Christ; for He is more than enough!
